Introduction
Developing a master plan for a trail through this area that complements the character of the region is a complex task. The proposed trail corridor crosses through many different landscapes; the relatively high density area in the Telluride Region, the lower density of the San Miguel Valley, the virtually undeveloped and narrow Leopard Creek Valley, the large cattle ranches of the Dallas creek drainage, and the highly agricultural and medium density of the Uncompahgre River Valley.
This plan was produced to provide a vision and a basis for the eventual construction of a trail through the entire corridor. Recognizing the desire of the people of the region to have alternative non-vehicular transportation routes, this plan provides a starting point for public outreach and decisions based on public input. These decisions may lead to right-of-way acquisition, surveying, engineering and possible trail construction. The proposed routes represent a synthesis of the information gathered and demonstrate the potential connections between regions and their scenic, historic and cultural highlights.
This study was made possible with funding through the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) and a local partnership consisting of San Miguel County, Ouray County, Telluride, Ridgway, Ouray, Town of Mountain Village and the Carsten’s.
