Signage and Interpretive Sites
There currently exists one interpretive site in the study area at Keystone Hill west of Lawson Hill. The United States Forest Service plans an interpretive site at Illium on mining history. The Bureau of Land Management plans interpretive sites at the Impson and Sawpit tram sites. Additional interpretive sites have been suggested at the Ouray Overlook, the Ridgway Town Park, Dallas Divide Overlook, Placerville Skyway and Unaweep Tabeguache Byway and Skyway intersection.
Access Points and Connecting Trails
Access points to the Skyway Trail should occur at any of three types of nodes: historical sites, proposed or existing trailheads or existing road intersections. These nodes should provide vehicle parking and informative signage. There may also be interpretive signs, markers, plaques, or kiosks. Existing or potential access points include public parking in the City of Ouray, the Town of Ridgway Town Park, the Dallas Divide Overlook, Noel/Last Dollar Road, Sam’s, X48/Sheep Draw, Brown/Alder Creek, SH145/SH62 intersection, Placerville Town Park, Sawpit/Fall Creek intersection, Impson/Leopard Creek, Vanadium/Bear Creek, Lime/Sheep Creek, and Society Turn Trailhead. The BLM plans to provide 2 or 3 access points along the San Miguel River Road between Sawpit and Deep Creek. These will access the four miles of old road that was closed to motorized use in 1995.
The Telluride Bike Trail, the Galloping Goose Trail, and the Riverway from Ridgway to the Ridgway Reservoir are the only trails that connect directly to the proposed trail. Several trailheads can be accessed from connecting roads providing access to national forests and wilderness areas including Lizardhead, Uncompahgre, and Mount Sneffels and to BLM lands to the north.
