Dave Wood Road Demo
is a proof-of-concept demonstration for integrating maintained Geographical Information across jurisdictional boundaries on a regional basis.

Historically the Dave Wood Road was constructed to move mining supplies from the City of Montrose, over the Uncompahgre Plateau, and into the town of Telluride using mule trains. Eventually this road became obsolete to rail transportation. Today CDOT highway connects these two locations with a route around the plateau and through the town of Ridgway leaving the remnants of the Dave Wood Road for seasonal excursions.

The problem is that large tracts of land straddling the boundary between Montrose and Ouray counties are being developed. The primary access to this area is from Montrose via the Dave Wood Road. Interesting enough, this access begins in Montrose County, goes through a portion of Ouray County, and returns back into Montrose County. The fact that the road also goes through San Miguel before connecting with the highway only compounds the problems - especially if Telluride, which is in San Miguel County is the desired destination for this developing area. It should also be noted that a large proportion of the current construction and service sector for Telluride commutes from Montrose and an improved Dave Wood Road would significantly reduce the travel time for these people.

Grappling with the issues are the Road and Planning representatives from all three counties. Included in the discussion are staff from two CDOT regions and the USFS.

The SouthWest Data Center was asked to help in this process. Since is was immediately relevant to work on the Data Integration Project it seemed only logical.

To enable all the "players" to literally "be on the same page" a series of Mapbooks and Indexes were created. Use the Maps and Viewer buttons in the navigation bar to access these resources.
